When do yous change 'y' to 'ies'?

If you lot are writing almost your 24-hour interval and you come across a baby, you could write 'Today, I saw a baby', just if you saw more than 1 baby, y'all would write 'Today, I saw 2 babies'.

The adjacent day you lot might be writing about your 24-hour interval again, and you saw a donkey then you would write 'Today, I saw a donkey', but if you lot saw more than i donkey, yous would write 'Today, I saw two donkeys'.

Both words (baby and donkey) end in the letter 'y', so how come the first example removes the letter 'y' and adds the messages 'ies' to make it plural, whilst the second case merely adds the letter of the alphabet 's' to brand information technology plural?

The spelling rule

The spelling dominion is: when the give-and-take has a vowel (a, e, i, o, u) before the letter of the alphabet 'y', y'all add the alphabetic character 's' and when the word has a consonant (b, c, d, f, thou, h, j, g, 50, m, n, p, q, r, due south, t, five, west, x, y, z) before the alphabetic character 'y', you remove the 'y' and replace information technology with 'ies'.
